Where did LMKI start?
Flour Bluff, Texas, just southeast of Corpus Christi (the
Laguna league) was the origin of LMKI.
How is it organized?
Individual leagues (e.g., NWA, Southside, East Brownsville,
etc.) are within Districts. There are currently 7 districts. The District
hosts mid-season and All-Star tournaments and schedules teenage play. A
Corporate board oversees the financial and rules issues of the corporation.
How many girls play?
Over 5000. Leagues are in the Brownsville, Corpus Christi,
Austin, and Fort-Worth areas. (Come on San Antonio, Houston - what are you
waiting for?)
Why aren’t all the rules the same as baseball?
Because you have to kick the ball to put it in play. And the
ball is soft. And the field is smaller. Trust the umpires – they know the
rules. (If you are nice, they will explain them to you.)
How is the site of the All-Star tournament selected?
In a three year rotation, it is held in a Corpus Christi
district, in a Brownsville district, and then elsewhere (Austin, Fort-Worth
etc). The host site must have at least four fields and lights.
Where can I buy a kickball?
Most leagues keep a supply of official balls in the
concession stand. The yellow balls from local stores lose their "roundness"
fairly quickly. If one of our balls fails quickly, bring it back for a
replacement.
Do players need to wear cleats?
Not officially, but it sure helps – the clay/sand gets
slick. Small nubbies are good for younger players. No steel spikes allowed.
(For same reason that jewelry is not permitted – safety.)
How many games/practices per week?
The game and practice schedule is decided by each league and
coach. It will vary based on the age of the player.
What is Opening Night? Do I bring my daughter?
Yes! Opening night is the time to meet your new teammates
and for parents to get some basic information. Starting in March, a number of
meetings are held that are vital to the league – umpire clinics, scorekeeping,
team mom meetings etc.
How long do games last?
Clock time of 1 hour 15 minutes max. Rookies play 3 innings,
PeeWees on up play six innings, time permitting. There is a mercy rule (15 run
lead after 3 1/2 innings) for Juniors and above (standings are not kept for PW/Rookies).
How do I volunteer to help with umpiring, coaching or
field work?
Please contact the league president within your area. They
will gladly direct you to the proper person. This is a volunteer organization
and we depend on our parents and community for support.
